Sustainability in Focus: Leuphana University of Lüneburg launches new master's program in chemistry and resources with a sustainable approach

The new master's program “Sustainability Science: Resources, Materials and Chemistry (M.Sc.) is scheduled to start in October 2025. It reinforces the university's commitment to sustainability, especially through the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed together with the Brasilien- und Lateinamerika-Zentrum

Leuphana University of Lüneburg, partner of the Brasilien- und Lateinamerika-Zentrum of the University of Tübingen (BraLat), reaffirms its commitment to sustainability by launching the new master's program Sustainability Science: Resources, Materials and Chemistry (M.Sc.). The course, beginning in October 2025, is aimed at students interested in chemistry, materials science, and sustainability, offering an interdisciplinary and practical approach to face global environmental challenges.

What makes us even more excited is that this new master's program at our partner university will enable investment in transformative solutions to problems such as resource scarcity, climate change, and chemical pollution. The program prepares professionals to rethink chemistry in a regenerative way, integrating topics like artificial intelligence, planetary boundaries, diversity, and real-life case studies — including the importance of gender perspective in addressing chemical pollution.

The creation of this master's program further strengthens the focus of the collaboration between Leuphana University and the Brasilien- und Lateinamerika-Zentrum, which reached a significant milestone with Leuphana's participation in the German-Brazilian Symposium for Sustainable Development in 2024 ("Towards a Resilient and Safe Future"). Since then, the partnership has only deepened. An example is the signing, in February 2025, of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the universities, aimed at promoting interdisciplinary research and expanding scientific exchange between the two countries.

The document formalizes the cooperation between the institutions around the German-Brazilian Symposium for Sustainable Development , a biennial event that gathers researchers from various fields to discuss and develop solutions to environmental and sustainability challenges. Since 2003, BraLat has played a key role in organizing the symposium, considered an important interdisciplinary platform for Brazilians, Germans, and interested parties worldwide to debate environmental issues, new approaches to sustainability, as well as knowledge exchange and innovation between Brazilian and German scientists.

We are confident that this partnership will continue to grow with new joint projects in the field of sustainability and transformational science.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in February 2025 by the universities, is a strategic partnership of the Baden-Württembergisches Brasilien- und Lateinamerika-Zentrum der Universität Tübingen (BraLat) with the University of Hohenheim and Leuphana University (Lüneburg). This collaboration aims to strengthen academic ties between Germany and Brazil in the field of sustainability.
