What is colonialism?

The Brasilien-Zentrum from the University of Tübingen invite all for the online seminar “What is colonialism?”, with M.A.. Anderson Guimarães Mendonça from the Federal University of Pernambuco.

Since the beginning of modern times, people have been subjudged due to skin color and ethnicity. African people have been forced out of their own territories, Amerindians were exterminated and Asians were stigmatized for their culture. As such, the colonialism process, either by territorial invasion or mentality control, is strongly influencing the social formation of non-european societies. In the American continent, decolonization is the process connecting again with indigenous roots. In the African continent, it was the expulsion of colonizers that had remained in control until the 20thcentury. Lastly, in Asia the process of decolonization is perceived as the construction of culture and history by means of criticism of the colonial influence. These three examples demonstrate how the apparently similar debate can expose different world views and courses of civilization.
