Profile

Torsten Maurer's research interests focus on the analysis of media content and research into media use and impact, especially in association with political communication. The main focus is on empirical methods - in particular content analysis - and statistical data analysis.

Curriculum Vitae

Torsten Maurer studied at the University of Goettingen journalism and communications science, political sciences, economics, and social law. He was Research Assistant on the DFG project "Wahlabstinenz, Wählerabwanderung und politische Issues" and on the German Israeli Foundation project "From the Melting Pot to Cultural Pluralism: Production and Consumption of Media by and for Ethnic and Minority Communities“. From 1999 to 2003 he was Research Assistant at the Institute of Journalism and Communications Science at the Free University of Berlin.

After completing his Ph.D. (2003) thesis ‘TV news and the quality of news on German television’, he was a lecturer and researcher at the College of Journalism, and from 2004 to 2010 Assistant Professor (C1) at the Institute of Journalism and Communications Science at the Free University of Berlin. He spent the summer semester of 2007 as a Visiting Professor for Communications Theory / The Effects of Media and Media Usage, and the winter semester of 2008/09 as a Visiting Professor for Research Methods / Applied Communications Research (FU Berlin). In addition to his lecturing and research activities at university, Torsten Maurer was Director of Studies at the Göttingen Institute of Applied Communication Research (Institut für angewandte Kommunikationsforschung GÖFAK GmbH) until 2009, responsible for content analysis in TV, radio and press. Since the summer semester of 2010 he has been Deputy Head of the Department of Media Studies at the University Tübingen.
