Evaluation of the Hector Research Institute: a success story

External quality assurance took place for the second time in October 2024.

In October 2024, the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology has undergone external quality assurance for the second time since its establishment. The evaluation, carried out every five years by international experts, was conducted on October 10 and 11.

During the two-day visit to the Hector Research Institute in Tübingen, five external experts, representatives of the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK), and representatives of the Hector Foundation II had the opportunity to learn about the institute's achievements in detail. During poster presentations, lectures and discussion rounds, the experts not only got to know the work of the institute's Research Hubs, but also met the numerous employees and were able to engage in conversation with them. The result of the evaluation will be submitted to the Hector Foundation as a written report in a few weeks' time.

Evaluations of academic institutions are important to ensure the quality and relevance of research. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Trautwein, Managing Director of the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology, emphasizes this: “In our own teaching and scientific work, we teach our students, PhDs and postdocs how relevant a good feedback culture is in education and science. Now we have also been able to experience once again how much we can benefit from external expertise. We are looking forward to the final report and would like to thank everyone involved for their support.” Thanks to the regular objective review, the Hector Institute can adapt and improve the quality of its work, as well as its key topics and strategies, Trautwein continued.

Background: Evaluation process at the Hector Research Institute

The evaluation of the Hector Research Institute comprised several steps:

  • In a self-report provided in advance, the institute documented previous achievements and future goals.
  • The evaluators then visited the institute to gain an impression on site. The program included presentations, poster rounds on the research topics of the six research hubs and discussion rounds.
  • The experts will then prepare a detailed report containing recommendations and evaluations. This report will serve as a basis for future developments and strategic decisions.
