‘You have to learn how to self-regulate’

“Teach children more self-regulation skills in kindergarten and school,” urges Prof. Dr. Ulrich Trautwein, Professor of Education Sciences and Executive Director of the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen in a recent interview with BR - Bayerischer Rundfunk.

Children are increasingly experiencing difficulties in terms of concentration, stress and stamina. However, they lack the strategic support necessary to learn how to self-regulate. But what can we do? Experts from Leopoldina, including Trautwein, have written a statement outlining the problems and offering a solution: Self-regulation must be learned early in development. Self-regulation skills must become a guiding principle in the German education system.
