Startchancen-Programm

Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology involved in the evaluation of the Startchancen Program

Our Goal

Are the federal and state governments achieving their goal of reducing the dependence of educational success on social background? The Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology is part of the consortium evaluating the Startchancen Program.

The Challenge

In Germany, educational success is still closely tied to social background. The Startchancen Program aims to decouple educational success from social background and promote more equal opportunities. The program specifically supports schools with a high proportion of socially disadvantaged students. For this purpose, the federal and state governments have been jointly investing around 20 billion euros since the 2024/25 school year, spread over the next ten years.

Our Role

To ensure the success of the Startchancen Program, the initiative is scientifically evaluated and continuously improved based on the results. Success is specifically defined as reducing the link between social background and educational success, with a particular focus on strengthening basic skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic.

The contractor for the evaluation is the Institute for Applied Social Science (infas). It is supported by experts from various institutions who together form the evaluation consortium.

Project participants

Part of the evaluation consortium is Prof. Dr. Benjamin Nagengast, Professor of Educational Psychology and Deputy Director of the Hector Institute for Empirical Educational Research at the University of Tübingen.

Funding

The project is commissioned by the BMBFSJ.
