Research groups of the Natural Sciences and Medical Faculty screen producer strains, fermentation extracts and pure compounds for biological activities in their test systems of interest. Compound purification is supported in an iterative bioassay-guided process. Pure natural compounds are instrumental in validating and studying novel targets and interactions in biological systems. Structures with interesting pharmacological profile are evaluated in vitro and in vivo for their potential as lead structures in drug development. In collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and external partners compound optimisation is pursued.
