David Newman is Professor at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU). He received his PhD from the University of Durham. At BGU, Newman was responsible for the founding of the Department of Politics and Government in 1998, and the Centre for the Study of European Politics and Society (CSEPS) in 2003. From 1998 to 2014, he was chief editor of Geopolitics. In 2013, Newman was awarded the OBE for strengthening academic and scientific links between the UK and Israel.
His work focuses on Political Geography and Geopolitics with a special emphasis on the study of borders. He has published extensively on territorial and border issues in areas of ethnic conflict with a particular emphasis on Israel/Palestine. In recent years he has focused on the theoretical and conceptual debate surrounding the role of borders in the contemporary era.
He has co-edited the Routledge Handbook on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (with Joel Peters, Routledge, 2013), and has contributed articles to Political Geography, the European Journal of Social Theory and Progress in Human Geography, among others.
