Gastvortrag: Host state policies, socio-economic class, and Syrian refugees in Germany and Turkey

After the 2011 uprisings and the ongoing deterioration of the Syrian state, many Syrians have fled from the raging civil war and sought refugee in neighboring countries or outside the region. Some came to Europe and found it being torn between solidarity and insufficient engagement. In her talk, Wendy Pearlman will address the current situation of Syrian refugees in Turkey and Germany and talk about future challenges that refugees and host countries are facing.

Wendy Pearlman is the Martin and Patricia Koldyke Outstanding Teaching Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University, where she specializes in the Middle East. She is the author of three books, We Crossed A Bridge and It Trembled: Voices from Syria (HarperCollins 2017), Violence, Nonviolence, and the Palestinian National Movement (Cambridge University Press, 2011) and Occupied Voices: Stories of Everyday Life from the Second Intifada (Nation Books, 2003). She has also written dozens of essays, academic articles, or book chapters, including, “Narratives of Fear in Syria” (Perspectives on Politics, March 2016).
