Institutskolloquium IfP (03.12.25) – Legacies of exclusion and violence: Reflecting on a framework for analysing anti-gender politics

About the lecture: Anti-gender mobilization often tends to be defined as a new – and sometimes unexpected – challenge to gender equality and LGBTIQ+ inclusivity. Equally, it has been labelled as an unprecedented attack of such politics and policies, providing for a broad backlash. The whole label anti-gender has been attributed to such conservative, religious, radical right and other actors and organisations to underscore that they are against gender equality and LGBTIQ+ inclusion as defended by feminist and LGBTIQ+ actors and movements since more or less – depending on the context – late 1960s. However, has the history of (post-industrial) ‘Western’ – and other – societies not been marked by many doctrines and processes of exclusion, marginalisation, domination, and related violence? And should we not look into those and how they still play out in our contemporary ‘democratic’ societies to understand current phenomena of opposition to gender equality and LGBTIQ+ inclusivity? In this talk, Petra Meier, will reflect on these questions, presenting recent research conducted by the CCINDLE research consortium on Co-Creating Inclusive Intersectional Democratic Spaces Across Europe.
About Prof. Petra Meier
Petra Meier is Professor in Politics at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Antwerp. Her research focuses on the (re)production of (in)equality in politics and policies, mainly of social groups related to gender (identity) and sexual orientation. Current work investigates institutional political dynamics triggered by anti-feminist and anti-LGBTIQ+ mobilization, as well as effects of the latter on processes of political representation and the conceptualization thereof.
