Institutskolloquium IfP (07.05.25) - "Women under threat: perceptions of women's activism in Colombia"

Speaker: Dr. Juliana Tappe Ortiz (Centre for International Relations/Peace and Conflict Research (CIRP) at the University of Tübingen)

Wednesday, May 07th 2025, 16:00 c.t. / Room 124, Institut für Politikwissenschaft or online via Zoom

About the lecture: Women’s activism is often restricted by socially ascribed gender roles and limited access to power. As a result, women cannot easily bring about change through political channels, and particularly in civil wars, their activism is frequently perceived as dangerous. Juliana Tappe Ortiz discusses how perceptions of danger associated with women’s activism differ in conflict-affected contexts. She hypothesizes that women’s activism in secular groups is perceived as particularly dangerous, while activism in religious groups is seen as less threatening. Juliana will present novel survey data (N=1000) using a 2x2x2 factorial design on different types of women’s activism in Colombia, particularly within religious versus non-religious groups, and also discuss individual factors like gender, prior experiences of violence, and attitudes towards gender equity. This study contributes to understanding the risks for women activists’ lives and well-being in conflict-affected societies.

Dr. Juliana Tappe Ortiz is the new postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Tübingen. She is currently working on gender relations in conflicts, with a particular focus on the mobilization of women in religious groups in Colombia and Mexico. You can read her latest article in the Journal of Conflict Resolution here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/00220027241309284. The project presented is a collaboration with Julia Köbrich from the German Institute for Global and Area Studies.

The lecture will be held in English
