New Seminar: Understanding the Middle East through a Post-Colonial Lens

What the seminar is about

The aim of this seminar is to introduce you to some of the key debates in the field of Middle Eastern Studies and its historical developments over the last century using a postcolonial framework. Beside the focus on the Middle East we will study postcolonial theories that will help us to get a deeper understanding on the field and to conduct more critical analyses. Beyond this, such approaches will help us in paying attention to power relations between various states, and to acquire different knowledge on different kind of power structures, peoples and discourses.

This seminar aims at enabling you to form a critical understanding of Middle Eastern politics and at providing you with tools of critical analysis.

About the instructor

Sara Ababneh studied Political Science and Economics at Earlham Collage in Indiana, USA. She holds a PhD from Oxford University where she wrote her dissertation onIslamic Political Parties as a Means to Women’s Empowerment? The Case of Hamas and the Islamic Action Front”. Currently she is working as a researcher at the Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) at the University of Jordan in Amman.
