From organisational websites to personal statements of identity, values have a new visibility. This lecture considers the rise of ‘values’ and some of the factors behind it. It suggests that values take over much that religion sought to provide: a compass; a mode of signalling and communication; a basis of identity and differentiation; a focus of aspiration and cohesion. But what values alone cannot offer is contact with the spiritual and supernatural, so there is an opening for new and revived kinds of religiosity to emerge, minus the moralism of the old religion, and alongside the new secular values.

Linda Woodhead ist seit 2022 F.D. Maurice Professor am King’s College in London, wo sie als Direktorin die Abteilung für Theologie und Religionswissenschaften leitet. In ihren Forschungen arbeitet Woodhead meist interdisziplinär, insbesondere in den Bereichen Theologie, Religionswissenschaft und sozialwissenschaftliche Religionsforschung. Ausführlich hat sie über den Niedergang der institutionellen Religion, insbesondere der Kirchen, und den Aufstieg alternativer Spiritualitäten geschrieben. 2020 wurde Prof. Woodhead der Dr. Leopold Lucas-Preis durch die Evangelisch-Theologische Fakultät Tübingen verliehen.
