Current research topics

He is a leading scientist in microbiology and infection biology. The current objectives of his research are: The physiology of staphylococci, lipoproteins as key players in immune response and virulence, analysis of new antimicrobial compounds and bacterial-derived effector molecules and their interaction with the host. Currently he is studying how commensal bacteria on the skin overcome the immunological barriers of, how they can survive in the host, and how they control human cell's proliferation, motility and immune response. The bacterial influence on skin even goes so far that they are able to accelerate wound healing through their secreted effectors. This was also one of the recent scientific breakthroughs, namely, to demonstrate that many members of the skin microbiota and even gut microbiota secrete neurotransmitters that interact with adrenergic receptors of host cells to interfere with their metabolism. The commensal microbiota is important for human health. But we know too little about it.

Academic roles

He is working for many microbiology/immunology related journals as reviewer and as associate editor and is consultant for various national and international research institutions. He supervised > 120 PhD students and postdocs, >15 obtained a professorship.

Publications

He has published > 380 peer-reviewed publications, which have been > 37000 times cited. h-index = 99. (More details can be found at: https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=uq_ofGsAAAAJ&view_op=list_works)
