Lockers

You can enter every library building except the Manuscript Reading Room with your jackets and bags. However, if you want to lock things away securely, you can use our lockers in the foyer of the main building for one day. Users of the PhD students’ area can use the lockers there. It is also possible to rent some lockers long-term.

Day lockers 

You need a padlock, please bring your own or borrow one at the desk in the Circulation Center.

The lockers have to be emptied every evening. Any lockers that are not emptied will be opened by the caretaker and the contents treated as lost property. In this case the lock will not be returned.

Lockers can be rented for the current day at the counter of the Natural Sciences Branch Library. However, you may also bring your own padlocks.

Day lockers must be emptied daily by 6:45 p.m. at the latest. The locks must be removed. Long-term use is not permitted!

The lockers themselves are located in the entrance area of the PCB Library.

An external locksmith service is responsible for opening a locker (deposit lockers and lockers with padlocks) in the event of a lost key, a key being locked inside, or similar situations:

The user is responsible for placing the order and covering the costs. (To do so, you must provide your locker number and personal information and arrange a meeting place.)

Long-term locker hire

You can rent out long-term lockers from the private company AstraDirect in the University Library, Neue Aula and Alte Physik buildings.

Lockers are rented for an initial period of one year, but the contract renews automatically if you do not cancel it in time. AstraDirect can provide all details about canceling in normal and extraordinary circumstances.

AstraDirect also requires a one-off deposit of EUR 30 which is repaid at the end of the contract. Alternatively you can take out locker insurance with AstraDirect for EUR 10 per year. N.B.: Locker insurance is provided as default on the AstraDirect website! If you do not want this protection, you must change the default options.

AstraDirect also requires a one-off payment for P&P of EUR 1.50 for postage of the contractual.

How do I use my long-term locker?

Once an agreement has been concluded, AstraDirect will notify you of the locker number and the PIN code for the keypad lock.

You only have to pay once you can use your locker. The rental agreement is concluded between you and AstraDirect. The university is not involved in the contractual relationship. If you have any questions please contact AstraDirect directly.

Special semester lockers are reserved for disabled students. These are assigned by the University Library secretariat (main building 2nd floor, +49 (0)7071 29 72577).
Please contact the secretariat if necessary.

If you are using a padlock, please make sure the hasp is more than 4 mm thick. Smaller padlocks are ineffective on the system.

Lost keys

If something goes wrong and you need to have a locker opened, the locksmiths service Schlüsseldienst Schmid is officially authorized to do this throughout the university. It is the only authorized service. You can find their telephone number and the prices for opening lockers in the locker area. Prices vary according to time of day. You as user of the locker are responsible for commissioning and paying for the service.
