Here you will find answers to common questions about initial semester organization and longer-term course planning for the Anthropology (B.A.) program.
Semester Organization
Which courses do I have to take?
The most important aid for deciding on the appropriate modules in the respective semester are the respective curricula:
Please note that these are suggestions for the course of studies on our part and that you are given a certain degree of flexibility in your individual planning. Nevertheless, we would like to point out that some modules must be completed by the third or sixth semester at the latest, otherwise you may be exmatriculated (please refer to the examination regulations in Downloads and the FAQ).
In this regard, please also note that certain modules are only offered in the winter or summer semester.
After you have gained an initial overview of the modules, please use the course catalog in the ALMA portal of the University of Tübingen to register for the courses offered in the respective semester and to create your schedule. You will receive the necessary ZDV login ID from the Student Secretariat of the University of Tübingen after enrollment.

Information on the specific content and performance requirements of your chosen courses can be found either in the Module handbook or in the course catalog of the ALMA portal itself.
Please note that online 'booking' of events in the ALMA portal is not always possible. In these cases, please visit the first session of the corresponding event to register for it.
Where can I find the materials for my events?
Materials for the courses you attended can be found online in Moodle or in the ILIAS system of the University of Tübingen, depending on the course. Your ZDV login ID is required for registration.
Most courses are protected by a password, which you usually receive from your lecturers when attending the first session.
Furthermore, you can also find the materials and further literature of your courses in the "Handapparaten" in our library.
How will my ECTS be credited?
The Department of Anthropology is currently in the process of converting from paper slips to the online process. Therefore, both options are briefly explained here. Starting with the winter semester 2018/2019, the online procedure applies, which is bound to cut-off deadlines.
After successful attendance of a course, paper certificates will be issued, which can be picked up by you at specific times at the Scheinausgabe in the Department of Anthropology. After you have handed in your certificates (please every semester!) at the Examination office of the Faculty for Humanities , your achievements are now credited and can be viewed online in the ALMA portal under "Notenspiegel".
Due to the changeover to the online procedure, the previous practice with paper slips will be phased out. You will now be asked by your lecturers at the end of the semester to register for the exam in the ALMA portal. Please note that exam registration or deregistration is only possible during a certain time window. After you have completed all necessary performance requirements for the respective course and have registered for the exam, your ECTS points with grade will now be entered directly into the ALMA portal.
Course planning in anthropology
Here you will find help with long-term course planning in anthropology.
Please note again that you are given flexibility to a certain point in the course planning. However, certain deadlines must be observed for the orientation and intermediate examinations. You can find more information on this in the examination regulations and in the FAQ.
Supra-disciplinary, occupational field-oriented competencies (BQ-area)
The interdisciplinary, occupational field-oriented competencies (BQ area) consist of the modules "Language Preparation" (Module 9) with 9 ECTS credits and the "Key Qualifications" (Module 12) with 12 ECTS credits and only apply to students in the Ethnology major.
he module "Language Preparation" should ideally be completed in the first four semesters and thus before the start of the mobility semester. The aim here is to acquire knowledge of a language relevant for the mobility semester. For this purpose, courses can be attended at other institutes at the University of Tübingen (Slavic Studies, Indology, Oriental and Islamic Studies, Center for Specialized Languages or similar). After prior consultation with the university lecturers, further language skills can also be acquired in the fifth semester during the stay abroad.
Students who already study a philology relevant to their mobility semester in their minor subject are asked to contact the departmental advisor, as points acquired and credited there cannot be credited again for Ethnology.
The module "Key Qualifications" is designed to help you prepare optimally for your later career entry and professional life. The BQ points acquired here are usually acquired outside of anthropology, unless the corresponding seminar is explicitly designated as BQ-compatible for anthropologists. In addition to the professional competencies, soft skills are taught here. The "Studium Professionale" of the University of Tübingen offers a variety of events for this purpose.
We would like to explicitly point out the offer for obtaining various certificates through the "Studium Professionale".
Furthermore, it is also possible to have attended language courses (except English) credited as "key qualification". The departmental advisor is the most important point of contact regarding individual decisions on creditability.
Praxismodule (Modul 10)
The practical module can be completed either in the form of a study project in Germany or as a study semester abroad. As a rule, the module is prepared by modules 1-8 (especially language preparation) and spent abroad as a mobility semester. Possible activities here are:
- Conducting a study research,
- Internship,
- Semester abroad.
A combination (for example of internship and own research) is also possible. The goal is to gain experience in intercultural communication as well as in research and practice through this mobility semester. At the same time, language skills should be further developed through practice or advanced language teaching.
In addition to attending the preparatory module (Module 7), students are expected to engage in planning for the mobility semester at an early stage. This means deciding on a region, engaging with the local language through language classes, and contacting faculty from our department with a similar regional specialization.
Scientific work
Scientific work is one of the core competencies that should be taught during a study of ethnology. For this purpose, especially the attendance of the tutorial "Introduction to Comparative Cultural Research" in the first semester of your studies serves. At the same time, this page here serves to provide important information on the common form of work at our department, assistance with working in general, and contact information for the writing workshop.

However, please always also check with the lecturers which style is desired. In general, the consistency of a chosen style is the most decisive criterion here. We would also like to remind you that the „Anti-plagiarism declaration" is now an obligatory part of all scientific work at our department.

Writing Workshop
The Writing Workshop is an opportunity for undergraduate students of Anthropology to receive help and support with a wide variety of problems regarding the writing process of all academic papers (essay, term paper, bachelor's thesis...etc.) during their studies.
