Hochschulsport

Dear students at the University of Tübingen,
would you like to enjoy an unforgettable evening with good food and new people? Then mark your calendars! Three courses will be cooked: starter, main course, and dessert. You will stay together as a team of two for the entire evening and cook one randomly assigned course for two other teams at your home. You decide what exactly you want to cook. You will enjoy the other two courses at other teams' homes. New teams will come together for each course.

FAQs

Participation

Who can participate?

You can participate if you

  • are enrolled as a student at the University of Tübingen,
  • have access to a kitchen for cooking and enough space for 6 people,
  • live in Tübingen (excluding districts / Teilorte) and
  • speak German or Englisch

How much does registration cost?

Registration is free of charge. You only pay for the ingredients for your course.

Registration & cancelling

Registration:

Already a couple? TEAM REGISTRATION

  • Main registration period: May 11 – June 3, 2026
  • Late registration period: starting June 4, 2026

Still alone? INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATION

  • Main registration period: May 11–28, 2026
  • Late registration period: starting May 29, 2026

Cancellation:

During the main registration period, you can easily cancel your registration on your own via the self-service portal (applies only to teams) or by email. After that, cancellations are only permitted in emergencies to avoid unnecessary extra work for everyone.

Is my spot guaranteed?

You are very likely to be able to participate if you meet the eligibility requirements and register during the main registration period. In rare cases, however, it may not be possible to accommodate all registered individuals or teams.

Teams

How are the teams formed?

You can form your own teams of two, who will cook together and stay together for the evening, i.e. you can register directly with a partner. If you do not yet have a partner, you can also register alone. We will then assign you someone.

The distribution of the other teams, whom you will meet at dinner, is determined by the algorithm based on your place of residence. It finds the best route for all. The more people who join in, the better!

Can different teams from a shared flat register?

Yes! To ensure that we do not assign you the same course and to prevent double occupancy of kitchens, ALL flatmates must provide the correct flat number or a unique flat name (e.g. ‘LetsParty’) in the registration form.

Which kitchen to choose?

As a team of two, you must decide whose flat you want to cook in. If you have a free choice, choose the centrally located flat or the one with better transport links so that the distances between the courses are as short as possible.

Procedure & Organisation

How will the evening proceed?

At 6 p.m., everyone meets at the hosts' place for the starter, at 8 p.m. at the hosts' place for the main course, and at 10 p.m. at the hosts' place for dessert, where you can relax and enjoy the rest of the evening.

Make sure you allow enough time between courses to get from one place to the next. Also, make sure you choose a menu that is easy to prepare, as you won't have much time between courses to prepare the food.

How do I find out what to cook and where to go?

A few days before the student dinner, you’ll receive an email with all the important details. You’ll find out which course you’re responsible for cooking, which guests are coming, and where you’ll be a guest. Then you can start planning your evening.

Here’s how to read the information (using Anna & Elif as an example):

Figure 1: Here you can see all the information about Anna and Elif’s team. The algorithm has selected Anna’s address, so the course will take place at her place. You can tell this because only Anna’s address is listed. A total of 4 guests are coming, including 1 meat-eater, 1 vegetarian, and 2 vegans. Some guests have allergies or food intolerances, which are explicitly listed and must be taken into account. If they need to clarify anything, Anna and Elif can contact the respective guests using the contact information provided.

Figure 2: Here you can see Anna and Elif’s route and the assignment of courses. The algorithm has assigned the starter to Anna and Elif, so the starter will be cooked at Anna’s home. The main course will be served at Max’s, and dessert at Luca’s. Note: To avoid publishing “unnecessary” contact information, only the hosts who are serving the course at their own homes are listed by name and contact details.

Is there an afterparty?

  • Anmeldung: Ohne, kommt einfach vorbei
  • Wohin geht's? Erstmal ins Schaf

Klar, gerne!

Cooking & dietary choices

How elaborate and expensive should the course be?

That's entirely up to you! But remember that you have to buy the ingredients yourself and that the evening is tightly scheduled. It's therefore best to plan a menu that won't break the bank and is easy to prepare.

For ideas, check out our @betabalance_unituebingen on Instagram.

Can I choose which course I’d like to cook?

No, unfortunately not, as that would make it harder to divide the teams. You will be assigned to a group.

How are dietary preferences taken into account?

When registering, please indicate your dietary preferences (whether vegetarian, vegan or irrelevant) and any intolerances. This information will be passed on to the teams on your route and must be taken into account when cooking the courses.

Example: Among your guests are omnivores, vegetarians and vegans. Either you cook entirely vegan from the outset or you offer your guests appropriate alternatives.

SGM BeTaBalance is only responsible for organizing the study dinner and accepts no responsibility for any damage that may occur. The participants themselves are responsible for the running, content, and safety of the respective cooking evening.

Who is organising the student dinner?

The Student Health Management BeTaBalance is organising the student dinner. The Student Health Survey 2024 at the University of Tübingen revealed that students enjoy cooking but could benefit from better networking opportunities at the university. That's why we now have the student dinner!

Note: Registration and the algorithm-based assignment of routes and courses are organised through the external platform spinfood.
