University Dual Career Support Services for Student-Athletes

A joint research paper by Marcel Fahrner and Verena Burk (both Institute of Sports Science) explores the relevance of university dual career support services from a student-athletes’ perspective.

Today, numerous elite athletes pursue the twin pathway of dual careers. To assist student-athletes in their challenging endeavour of dual careers, universities around the world offer various support services.

Based on a unique international and multisport dataset originating from an online survey of 1,055 international student-athletes, who participated in the 2019 Winter and Summer Universiades, Marcel Fahrner, and Verena Burk (both Institute of Sports Science) examine the relevance of university dual career support services from a student-athletes’ perspective.

The study explores associations between socio-demographic, academic and sport-related variables as well as dual career support services. In this respect, it empirically substantiates the perceived relevance of university support services from a student-athlete perspective and complements the elite sport-related dual career literature. Moreover, the study helps to develop a sound awareness for student-athlete dual career support and thus contributes to the political discussion of creating adequate elite sport framework conditions.
