Athene Program

The Athene Program at the University of Tübingen aims to support women on their career path in science - from studying to professorship.

In the various program lines Athene Mentoring, Athene Grant and Athene Advanced, offers are made (or still being developed) for different target groups that are tailored to different

  • Career phases (e.g. studies, doctorate, postdoc, junior professorship, NG management, etc.)
  • Individual framework conditions and needs (e.g. international female scientists, trans*, inter* and non-binary people, first generation, migration background, caring responsibilities ...)
  • Study and subject cultures and structures

The program is financed from budget funds and funds from the Excellence Strategy.

Athene Grant of the University of Tübingen

Since spring 2013 - the first round of calls for applications for the Athene Program - 107 excellent young female scientists have already been supported on their career path. The first Athene women have already taken up professorships or achieved other impressive successes in academia. The Athene Program for young female scientists was originally one of the core measures of the future concept in the area of equality at the University of Tübingen and is now being continued as a successful model as part of the university strategy. The program aims to mitigate existing disadvantages for women in the academic system and thus pursue the University of Tübingen's declared goal of promoting academic excellence through equal opportunities for women at the university.

Members of the Faculty of Medicine with a clinical/medical focus (Dr. med.) are not eligible to apply.

What does the Athene Grant offer?

The intramural programme offers additional funds for research, which can be used flexibly, e.g. for assistants, conference participation or research organization. In addition, there is individual coaching related to the academic career and offers for the acquisition of science-related, interdisciplinary skills. Athene Mentoring for women Students and Scientists

The Athene Mentoring Program is aimed at women studying, in the doctoral and post-doctoral phase as well as female professors and supports women in pursuing a scientific qualification, both if they see their future in science and if they see their professional future outside of science. The aim of Athene Mentoring is to counteract the loss of women in the course of scientific qualification and to interest female students and scientists in the next qualification levels at an early stage.

The focus is on the special situation of women in the academic system and at the university and on counteracting discrimination.

FAQ

Why Mentoring for Women?

Women encounter very specific problems during their studies, during their academic qualification and even as professors. Their difficulties are often attributed - even by themselves - to individual deficits, although they are actually rooted in their situation as women. Women are therefore in a fundamentally different situation to men when studying and working in academia. They always have to prove their individual performance against the background of a whole range of discriminatory factors. A mentoring program for women helps them to be aware of these discriminatory factors and to learn methods to deal with them successfully and to repeatedly name them as such in the university environment.

Who is the Target Group?

The Athene Mentoring Program is aimed at women from BA student to MA, PhD, postdoc, junior professor to professor

Athene Mentoring supports women in pursuing an academic qualification, both if they see their future in academia and if they see their professional future outside academia.

The focus is on the special situation of women in the academic system and at the university and on counteracting discrimination.

What does Cascade Mentoring mean?

The program is a so-called cascade mentoring, in which women from one qualification level are mentored by the level above them. The mentoring is intended to increase the proportion of women in Master's degrees, doctorates and ultimately professorships. Exit strategies from academia are also supported where necessary. The mentoring relationships are flanked by workshops for networking within the various career levels and for further training both in terms of general key qualifications and specifically on the situation of women in studies and science.

What is the aim of the Program?

The aim of Athene Mentoring is to counter the loss of women in the course of academic qualification and to interest female students and academics in the next qualification levels at an early stage.

The focus is on the special situation of women in the academic system and at the university and on counteracting discrimination.

Athene Advanced - Career Coaching for Newly Appointed female Junior Professors

Career coaching for newly appointed female junior professors.

One of the first challenges at a new university is to settle into the subject and the faculty, to enter into personal and professional cooperation and to build up networks in order to be well positioned for the interim and final evaluation.

Newly appointed junior professors at the University of Tübingen (with and without tenure) are therefore offered three individual career coaching sessions.

The first coaching at the beginning of the junior professorship, the second coaching after approx. two years and the third coaching in the fourth or fifth year or after the interim evaluation of the junior professorship.

FAQ

Background of the Athene Advanced

The aim of Athene Advanced, as well as Athene Grant and Athene Mentoring, is to support women on their path into academia and later to a professorship, starting with their studies through to a junior professorship.

Taking up a junior professorship is associated with high and sometimes new requirements. In addition to the expected research/publication output and acquisition of third-party funding, it is also necessary to set up your own courses, teach and supervise qualifying candidates and perform tasks in academic self-administration as well as further training (e.g. university didactics). All of this against the backdrop of very limited (professionally divergent) material resources. In addition, this biographical phase often coincides with starting a family or already having family responsibilities.

TEAching Equality (TEA)

The Teaching-Equality program supports measures to create equal opportunities in studies. Funding is available for teaching assignments, guest lectures and travel expenses incurred in the context of practical lectures, courses, workshops or discussion groups. Funding is available for events at the University of Tübingen that fulfill one of the following criteria:

Applications for support from TEA funds can be submitted to the Equal Opportunities Officer at any time. The Equal Opportunities Commission decides on the approval of applications.
