New European Funding for research on apoptosis

IFIB Professor Ana Garcia receives ERC Consolidator Grant for APOSITE Project

Apoptosis (programmed cell death) is an important mechanism to remove damaged or old cells from the organism in a regulated fashion. It is, for instance, crucial for the development of life, immune response or maintenance of regular tissue function. Apoptosis is frequently disregulated or malfunctioning in cancer or neurodengenerative diseases.
The association of the proteins Bax and Bak initiates further steps that ultimately lead to the cell's programmed death. However, little is known about the spatiotemporal organisation of this step. IFIB professor Ana Garcia addresses this question in the newly funded APOSITE project (Apoptotic foci: composition, structure and dynamics).
