In the spirit of freedom of scenic and aesthetic disruption and in the depth of Hölderlin's texts, animation and music combine with a commitment to the fragment, to disruption, to openness ...

The Echo of Hölderlin has many voices and won’t fade away. Young singers around the world learn the German language to sing German kunstlieder and, accordingly, experience Hölderlin lieder and their colourful history. The voices of Yue Wang, Ilker Arcayürek, Victoire Bunel, the composer Wolfgang Rihm and the virtuosic duo Hartmut Höll and Mitsuko Shirai carry the movie „Hölderlins Echo”. All these singers respond through music to the voice of an outsider, who spent the second half of his life – supposedly as a mad poet – in a little tower in Tübingen. During this time of seclusion, Hölderlin created several fascinating poems, which were reinterpreted by the Jewish composers Viktor Ullmann and Gideon Klein during their captivity in Theresienstadt, shortly before they were murdered in Auschwitz.

“Hölderlins Echo” also resonates with many voices in the film's elaborately designed animations, which were created by an international team. Four poetic animated scenes show episodes from Hölderlin's life and constantly reinterpret the figure of the restless, loving, ever-breaking, multi-faceted poet through the individual styles of the animation artists.

The documentary was produced at the institute for Media Studies at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen. Supported by the MFG Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg and in cooperation with the Center for Media Competence University Tübingen, an extensive team worked on the film.
