European IR Summer School in Tübingen

The European International Relations Summer School (EIRSS) 2010 will take place in Tübingen from 26 July to 6 August. This year's theme is "Conflicts in Europe - Europe in Conflicts". The EIRSS is organised on behalf of the ECPR-Standing Group on International Relations. Its participants are primarily doctoral students from across Europe. The deadline for applications is 31 January 2010.

With the 2004/7 enlargement, conflicts have become a prominent theme in European Union policy and academic debates. Indeed, enlargement was justified to a great extent by presenting it as a solution to the revival of ethnic conflicts in Central and Eastern Europe. At the same time, the EU has become engaged in conflicts outside its own territory both through foreign policy means as a “normative power” and through military means in the form of a number of EU missions, from the Kosovo to the Congo. The EIRSS 2010 provides a forum for doctoral students to review the state of the art in conflict analysis and the debate about conflicts in Europe, the effect of European integration on conflict, and the impact of EU actions in conflicts beyond EU borders. Its aims are to:

1. Provide an overview of the main debates on conflict and conflict analysis, with an emphasis on so-called “ethnic” and “religious” conflicts;


2. Discuss the present status of conflicts in the EU and the role that European integration has played in transforming them


3. Debate whether the nature of conflicts has changed after the end of the Cold War, and which consequences this may have for conflict transformation


4. Evaluate the involvement of the EU in conflicts beyond its territory


5. Allow participants to present and discuss their own projects and offer constructive critical feedback

The programme also includes a visit to the Institute for Peace Education Tübingen (IFT). On Saturday, 31 July we will offer an excursion to the nearby Bebenhausen Monastery and Palace.

As participant you are required to

1. Provide a paper of 10-15 pages, outlining your project, by 1 July 2010


2. Have read all project papers before the beginning of the summer school


3. Have read all required reading before the relevant modules


4. Be present in all sessions throughout the summer school and participate actively in the discussion

Upon completion of the programme requirements, you will earn 6 ECTS credits.

The tuition fee for the EIRSS 2010 is 200 €.

Accommodation

• in nearby hotel Meteora (www.hotel-meteora.de)


• basic but clean rooms for 31.50 - 44.50 € per day (single and double/ with and without private facilities)


• participants have to book independently on a first come, first serve basis by 1 April 2010 (Later bookings cannot be guaranteed, as the contingent reserved in our name will then be released to the public!)

Thomas Diez is Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Tübingen. Most recent publications: co-edited volumes on European Integration Theory (second edition, Oxford University Press 2009), Cyprus: A Conflict at the Crossroads (Manchester University Press, 2009) and The European Union and Border Conflicts (Cambridge University Press, 2008).
Andreas Hasenclever is Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies and International Relations at the University of Tübingen. He is the co-author of Theories of International Regimes (Oxford University Press, 1997) and the author of Die Macht der Moral in der internationalen Politik (The Power of Morality in International Relations, Campus, 2001).
Thomas Nielebock is Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Tübingen. He has published widely in German on nuclear weapons, democracy and peace, and other peace-related issues.
