What are deepfakes and why do they matter? - New article by Maria Pawelec

In a background article for the Israel Public Policy Institute (IPPI), Maria Pawelec explains what "deepfakes" are, how the technology has evolved since its emergence in 2017, who is driving this development, and what social and ethical implications deepfakes have in various fields, from politics to pornography and crime to entertainment, education, activism and satire.

The contribution is part of a cooperation between the Heinrich Böll Stiftung and the Israel Public Policy Institute IPPI within the German-Israeli Tech-Policy Dialog. The programme offers a platform for scientists and practitioners from science, technology and civil society to discuss the impact of new technologies on our society and to gain new impetus and insights to promote democratic values.
