Program details

Learn about the microbes that are all around us and shape our daily lives!

The Master's program 'Microbiology and Infection Biology' will give you an excellent insight into the multifaceted world of microbes, providing fundamental knowledge in microbiology and infection biology, cutting edge research in renowned laboratories and a high number of hands-on courses. Join us for a great study experience at one of Germanys Universities of Excellence.

Scientific profile

The Master's program in Microbiology and Infection Biology is run by the IMIT (Interfaculty Institute of Microbiology and Infection Medicine), which covers the research areas microbial physiology, microbial compounds and infection biology. Physiological research focuses on the molecular basis of cellular processes in bacteria, the mechanisms of adaptation to changes in the environment and symbiotic interactions. Various IMIT research groups are working on the molecular processes of natural product biosynthesis and on the mechanisms by which they inhibit the growth of bacterial pathogens. Infection biology research focuses on staphylococci, the most common cause of nosocomial infections, and gastrointestinal pathogens. Another focus is the microbiome, including its capacity to prevent infections as well as its impact on drug metabolism and human health.

  • many hands-on courses
  • very good opportunities for stays abroad
  • highly connected to our cluster of excellence cmfi
  • closely interlinked with the CIB (Cellular and Immunological Biosciences) Master's degree program
  • Interfaculty program with a broad research focus (medicine, ecology, biotechnology, physiology, infection biology, bioinformatics, ...)

The Master of Science Microbiology and Infection Biology is a two years program with a total 120 ECTS credits.

There is a high proportion of practical work in almost all modules.

The first year will equip you with broad foundation in microbiology and you will learn state-of-the-art molecular biology and biochemistry methods and bioinformatics. In addition, you can sharpen your profile by freely choosing modules from different research areas.

In the second year, experimental work in our laboratories is planned, as well as training in scientific communication.

For more information about the curriculum, check our homepage

We offer places for short stays abroad every year with an internal application process:

  • 2 places for a 7 weeks lab practical at the University Aix-Marseille (counted with 12 ECTS credits as Research Module I)

Erasmus

Selected students can apply for support via Erasmus+ internship (long-term mobility) to cover the costs of travel and housing.

Regardless of this, the Department of Biology is happy to support you in your plans to study abroad, e.g. via Erasmus.

A good oppurtunity for short-term travels abroad are CIVIS-courses which are free and open to all students enrolled at the University of Tübingen.

Freiwilliger Auslandsaufenthalt
