School of Business and Economics

FAQs for Bachelor's students

Information for entering students and basic information

Where do I find the course catalog?

The course catalog is publicly available on alma: Click on Studies offered Show university course catalog.

When does the lecture period begin and when does it end?

The lecture time varies every year as well as the lecture-free time. You can find the current dates and those of the next semesters under the semester dates and application deadlines on the university website.

How do I sign up for classes?

You do not have to register for most of the courses offered by the School of Business and Economics. The course catalogue on the alma-portal indicates whether and how you have to apply for the respective courses. The compulsory lectures are almost all without compulsory attendance, therefore you attend the course without having to prove your attendance or register for it. This may vary in the higher semesters, please refer to the respective information in the alma-portal or the information on the websites of the individual chairs.

How do I sign up for language courses?

You must register for the B.Sc. International Economics and B.Sc. International Business Administration language courses:

  • B.Sc. International Economics: In the alma-portal, you will find information on whether and how to apply or register for each course. At the end of the previous semester, you should check on alma to see what deadlines have been set for registration so that you don't miss them.
  • B.Sc. International Business Administration:
    • Case 1) European languages: The application deadlines will be published on the website of the Fremdsprachenzentrum. In addition, students of this program always receive an e-mail with the password for registration in advance. Please register on time at the beginning of the registration period.
    • Case 2) East Asian language: see B.Sc. International Economics.

What is a tutorial? Do I have to attend the tutorials and register for them?

Tutorials usually take place in the context of a larger lecture, for example the tutorial on the lecture "Mathematics for Economics and Business Adminstration". In a lecture the material or examples are presented. In a tutorial, meanwhile, tutors discuss exercises accompanying the lecture in smaller groups. Usually, the tutorials take place weekly and serve mainly to illustrate the discussed material in the lecture. Please note the respective registration deadlines for the tutorials, which are usually announced in the first lecture. (Sometimes it is not necessary to register for the tutorials.)

In the module manual and on Campus certain requirements for courses are specified. What exactly does this mean?

The requirements that you will find in the module handbook or on alma for a specific module or course are primarily meant to be a guide for students. No one will check whether you have passed certain exams. For example, the module "B270 Investment and Finance" is a prerequisite for the module "B250 Financial Accounting". You can also take "B250 Financial Accounting" if you have not yet passed the examination for "B270 Investment and Finance". However, you should be aware that certain contents from the module mentioned are helpful and will not be explained again. You may therefore have to be prepared to review any missing requirements during the semester.

Where can I find the lecture materials?

Each chair sets up a folder in Ilias (https://ovidius.uni-tuebingen.de). All relevant lecture materials will be placed there. Check this regularly to make sure you do not miss any information provided there. All information provided in ILIAS is considered to be public knowledge.

How do I get the password of the lecture folder in Ilias?

You will receive the password in the first lecture. If you cannot attend the first lecture, please ask your fellow students for the password. During the corona period it is sometimes possible to join the courses on ILIAS without a password. Sometimes the ILIAS passwords are published in the course catalog on alma (--> Course offerings --> Show course catalog), sometimes you can find the passwords on the pages of the chairs.

How do I register for the tutorials?

You can usually find this information under the respective course on alma.

Which courses can I have credited as key qualifications?

Students of the B.Sc. programs of the School of Business and Economics need a total of 9 ECTS credits. These can come from various courses. A detailed description can be found in the module handbook in module SQ100.
Possible courses are e.g. events of the:

  • Global Ethic Institute
  • Foreign Language Center
  • All courses of the Transdisciplinary Course Program.

There are also some courses of the School of Business and Economics that can be credited towards the module Key Qualification - you can find them in the course catalog at alma alma.uni-tuebingen.de → Studies offered → show university course catalogue.

Furthermore, there is also the possibility to receive ECTS credits for the following activities for the module SQ100 Key Qualification:

  • A semester abroad is credited with 6 ECTS credits for the module Key Qualification.
  • An internship can be recognized as SQ through the Career Center. This requires an internship report to be prepared and submitted to the Career Center. They will issue a certificate which can subsequently be submitted to the Examination Office.
  • Involvement in university groups. Again, proof of the number of ECTS credits must be submitted to the Examination Office.

Specialization Studies (Profilbildungsbereich)

I don't know what to choose in the specialization studies (Profilbildungsbereich). What are my options or what is recommended? Are some modules prerequisites for certain areas of advanced undergraduate studies?

Examination regulations 2023

The profile education area is planned in the third and partly fourth semester. The choice of modules within the profile education area varies depending on the degree program:

  • In the B.Sc. Economics and Business Administration (Business Administration option), you must take two of three modules from B290 Global Strategy, E210 Microeconomics II, S220 Quantitative Methods in Economics and Business Administration in order to complete the profiling area (12 ECTS credits).
  • In the B.Sc. Economics and Business Administration (Economics option) there is no profile building module, you take E210 Microeconomics II and S220 Quantitative Methods in Economics and Business Administration.
  • In the B.Sc. Economics and Business Administration (Wiwi option) there is a Business Administration profile area and an Economics profile area. In each case, 3 modules, i.e. 18 ECTS points each, must be completed. In the Business Administration profile area, students must choose from B240 HRM and Organization, B220 Marketing, B290 Global Strategy, S220 Quantitative Methods in Economics and Business Administration, B250 Financial Accounting and Taxation and J200 Private Law. In the Economics profile area, students must choose from B240 HRM and Organization, E230 Macroeconomics II, E210 Microeconomics II and S220 Quantitative Methods in Economics and Business Administration.
  • In the B.Sc. International Business Administration you take one module from B290 Global Strategy, E210 Microeconomics II, S220 Quantitative Methods in Economics and Business Administration (6 ECTS credits) and are free to choose which one you would like to take.
  • There is no profile building module in the B.Sc. International Economics. Here the modules E210 Microeconomics II and S220 Quantitative Methods in Economics and Business Administration must be taken.

Examination regulations 2018:

In the third semester you can choose between Global Strategy, Public Economics (now Microeconomics II) and Quantitative Methods in Economics and Business Administration. In order to complete the specialization studies, two of three modules must be taken.

You can start with all three modules at the beginning of the semester and then decide in the course of the semester which exams you will take. If you cannot decide at all, you can also take all three modules from the specialization studies. It is possible to count the third module towards the area of advanced undergraduate studies Elective Studies.

Quantitative Methods in Economics and Business Administration will help you in your advanced studies if you want to go further in the direction of economics, but also if you want to specialize in quantitative areas of business administration, such as marketing. Marketing often works with large data sets that you have to analyze. A sound education in statistics is helpful for this.

An interest in a topic also often helps when choosing.

Microeconomics II is the continuation of Microeconomics I. Not taking Global Strategy does not have a negative effect on your choice of Business Administration.

For some Master's programs, it is important to have a certain number of ECTS credits from quantitative modules. If the Master's program is more quantitatively oriented, it therefore makes sense to take Quantitative Methods in Economics.

studying abroad

What possibilities are there to complete a semester abroad and where can I get information about the application procedure, the options and formalities?

In order to complete a semester abroad, it is important that you have enough time for planning. The application deadlines for the individual Erasmus (EU) and overseas programmes vary considerably and often require the relevant documents more than one year before the start of the semester abroad.
For more information on how to apply and the deadlines, see the links below.

Erasmus

International Office

I am returning from abroad and would like to have my courses credited, how do I proceed?

After an exciting semester abroad, it is now important to have the courses taken credited by the University of Tübingen. There are some formalities to be observed. A total of 36 ECTS credits can be credited in the Bachelor's programme for the economics modules and 9 ECTS credits for the language and key qualifications module. The crediting is carried out by the respective chairs. Since crediting usually has to be carried out at several chairs one after the other and takes some time to process, you should allow sufficient time for crediting and do this as early as possible after your return from the semester abroad.

The following steps must be observed when crediting courses:

  1. Yellow routing slip: The Examination Office is responsible for the final crediting and registration of the courses in your Transcript of Records. All courses have to be entered on a yellow routing slip which you can request by e-mail to pruefungsamtspam prevention@wiso.uni-tuebingen.de. Please indicate whether you would like to pick it up at the service office of the examination office or have it sent to you by post (specify your address!)
  2. On the respective homepages of the chairs you will usually find a concrete list of which documents are required for crediting. This can vary for the different chairs.
  3. You will find the grade conversion table and the information sheet for the recognition of foreign academic achievements on the Homepage of the Examination Office.
  4. For crediting towards the Area of Advanced undergraduate Studies Elective Studies, please email anerkennungspam prevention@wiwi.uni-tuebingen.de with transcript/proof of performance. Find here more information,

I'm leaving early for my semester abroad and can't participate in the Tübingen exams. What can I do?

I am going abroad early and cannot take the exams here. What can I do? The semester times in most countries differ significantly from the German semester times. Therefore, starting your semester abroad before the exam period, e.g. already at the end of July/beginning of August, may mean that you are no longer in Germany for the exams of the pre-semester. When planning the - in this example summer semester - you can already make sure that you choose courses where either no final exam is required but e.g. a term paper or you look for courses that take place in a blocked form and where the exam dates are thus earlier in the semester. The academic advisory service will be happy to assist you in finding suitable courses.

It may also be necessary for you to write the exam abroad. You can find the requirements and the application form here: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/122572#c661045 (Application for remote exam).

Language courses

I am a student of B.Sc. International Business Administration, what choice do I have for languages?

First of all, you can choose between two options:

  • a: language training in two business languages of your choice (English, French, Spanish, Italian)

In specialisation b) you will take advantage of the offer of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Tübingen.

In specialisation a) you will attend the language courses of the Language Learning Centre (Fachsprachenzentrum) of the University of Tübingen. The aim is to reach the UNIcertIII level (equivalent to C1 according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages) or the UNIcertII level in Italian by the end of your studies.

At the beginning of the first semester you will take a placement test, which will determine your language level and will allow you to be assigned to a specific course. From then on, you will increase your course level by one level each semester until you can take the UNIcert III exam.

You can find more information about the concrete course of the courses here.

This information relates to students in the 2023 examination regulations. Different regulations apply to students in the 2018 examination regulations.

I want to change my language, is that possible?

If you do not feel comfortable with your choice of language and would like to change languages, this is usually possible. Please send us (studienfachberatungspam prevention@wiwi.uni-tuebingen.de) a short e-mail and tell us your new language combination. If you change your language, please note that this may lead to an extension of your study time, as you will have to catch up on the courses.

Do I have to take a placement test for the language courses, and if so, when?

B.Sc. International Business Administration

For students of the B.Sc. International Business Administration with technical languages, the registration and enrolment phase specified by the Language Learning Centre applies. Further information on the placement tests can be found here.

I would like to apply for a master program and take the TOEFL setting the University of Tuebingen as a recipient institution? What is the institution code?

The institution code for the TOEFL is 5760 Eberhard Karls Univ TUEBINGEN.

I am studying at B.Sc. International Economics and would like to deepen my knowledge of languages in the area of Elective Studies. What do I have to consider?

You choose the language courses according to the module handbook for extracurricular courses, which you can download here. In the area of advanced undergraduate studies "Elective Studies" you will have to take 15-30 ECTS credits, which exceed the requirements of the compulsory module and for which recognition is regulated in the module handbook. Alternatively, the subject representative can agree to a different version of the module manual. You can also select individual language modules (e.g. also a language course from abroad) and fill the focus area with economics modules. For example, if you chose Italian and Spanish as your languages, it is possible to take the module Language Practice II in Italian (6 ECTS credits) and Language Practice II in Spanish (6 ECTS credits) and up to a further 18 ECTS credits from in-depth economics modules.

I am studying at B.Sc. International Economics and would like to study regional studies of China/Japans/Koreas/India or politics/geography/history in the Elective Studies. What do I have to consider?

If you want to study the regional studies of China/Japans/Korea/India or one of the subjects Politics/Geography/History in the area of advanced undergraduate studies "Elective Studies", you have to take at least 15 ECTS credits from the compulsory area as listed in the module handbook for extracurricular courses (download here). In addition, you can either take further credits from the elective area ( for example, elective module 1: Germany and the EU with a further 15 ECTS credits in political science) or fill up the area of advanced undergraduate studes "Elective Studies" with economic science modules.

The following applies to the 2018 examination regulations:
If you have taken at least 15 ECTS credits in the Elective Studies focus area from the above-mentioned areas, your certificate will have the addition B.Sc. International Economics and East Asian Studies (or European Studies or South Asian Studies or American Studies or Middle Eastern Studies).

This regulation no longer applies to the 2023 examination regulations. However, all courses taken will of course still be listed on the transcript.

What do I have to consider when registering for the UNIcert exam?

Examination regulations 2023

Students of the B.Sc. International Business Administration with the choice of two specialist languages do not have to take the Unicert-III examinations.

Examination regulations 2018

Students of the B.Sc. International Business Administration with the choice of two subject languages must, if they have chosen English, French and Spanish as one of their languages, take one UNIcert examination in economics per language. The prerequisite for this are the language courses according to the module manual for the extra-curricular courses  in the number of ECTS credits listed there. Exam registration is possible if the requirements for exam participation are met. This includes the successful completion of courses. This applies to the compulsory courses of a module, not the elective subject(s). For example, Business English II-III and Business English I must already have been completed when registering for the first language exam. This applies to the so-called first foreign language and is intended to prevent people from registering who do not yet have the necessary language skills. Exceptions are possible for the 2nd foreign language. Missing certificates can be submitted later. Please note the very early deadlines for registering for the examinations. Further information on deadlines and registration procedures can be found on the website of the Foreign Language Center.

Specialisation Area Elective Studies

I would like to complete a non business focus within the Elective Studies focus area, can I still attend business courses additionally?

In the B.Sc. programmes, you can choose the focus area Elective Studies. Here you can either choose further economic/business modules or something noneconomic. If you wish to study a different subject, you must complete at least 15 ECTS credits in this subject (Exceptions are advanced language courses (see next question)). You will find the respective curriculum in the module handbook for extracurricular courses in the download area. If you would like to take further courses in economics or business, this is possible. A maximum of 30 ECTS credits can be credited in the focus area Elective Studies.

Can I also choose two non-business focuses?

Students who choose a non-business focus within the focus area Elective Studies must at least earn 15 ECTS credits in this non-business focus. A maximum of 30 ECTS credits is possible per specialization area. Therefore, you can also take two non-economic specializations with 15 ECTS credits each, e.g. Japanese Studies and Psychology.

Bachelor thesis

I would like to write my Bachelor thesis, when is this possible and how is the procedure (registration, letter received)?

You can start your Bachelor's thesis as soon as you have completed all the examinations that are scheduled up to the third semester according to the curriculum. In the summer semester, all B.Sc. students in the fourth or higher semester who have not yet written their Bachelor's thesis are contacted by the Examination Office. On the attached form you can indicate your preferences for your areas of specialisation. The focus areas are not crucial for your preferences for the Bachelor's thesis. (Note: The Bachelor's thesis is an independent module and is not counted as one of the specialistation areas). It is recommended that you interpret your preferences according to your areas of specialisation, since you have already acquired a great deal of prior knowledge by choosing the areas of specialisation and their modules. However, you can also go according to your interests and additionally choose Bachelor seminars with less overlapping subjects as lower preferences.

If you then receive the allocation of a place, you must formally apply again via the chair so that you can actually take your place. The assignment is only a guarantee for a place, this will be confirmed only by the application at the chair. If you do not apply, this guarantee expires.

Further information can be found here.

I would like to write my bachelor thesis, but I am not sure exactly when I would like to write it. What do I have to consider?

If you decide to write your bachelor thesis, but have not filled in or handed in the letter, you have no guarantee of a place in the seminar of your choice. You can still try to apply to the respective chairs, as they may still have places available. However, this may result in you not receiving the desired seminar or bachelor thesis topic.

End of study

How do I calculate my Bachelor's overall grade?

Examination regulations 2023:

Major subject:

The overall grade in the degree program is calculated as follows (§13 special part of the examination regulations EcoBA, IBA, § 15 IEco):

2. thirty-four percent of the arithmetic mean calculated from the CP of all graded modules not mentioned in section 1 is included in the overall grade.
3. the SQ100 module is not included in the calculation of the overall grade.

Minor subject (§10 special part of the examination regulations for the Bachelor minor subject Business Administration and Economics)

First, we calculate the arithmetic average of all module grades weighted by the respective ECTS points in the areas of advanced undergraduate studies and the bachelor thesis module. In addition, we calculate the arithmetic average of all module grades of the other modules, weighted by the respective ECTS points (with the exception of the module Key Qualifications, but including the modules Book-Keeping and Mathematics for Economics and Business Administration). The calculation of the overall grade includes the first-mentioned average ( areas of advanced undergraduate studies and bachelor thesis module) with a weight of 66% and the second-mentioned average with a weight of 34%.

Relevant is the examination regulation (special part, § 10 for the minor subject Business Administration and the minor subject Economics):

The Bachelor's minor subject overall grade is calculated from the average of all grades of the graded modules weighted by credit points.

Can I complete more ECTS credits than my degree programme requires?

In each B.Sc. programme of the School of Business and Economics, students can earn 30 ECTS credits more than the number of points they are required to earn in their programme. For example, students studying in the B.Sc. Economics and Business Administration can earn up to 210 ECTS credits. Of course, only the 180 ECTS credits that are required for the study programme will be credited. The additional credits are listed on the transcript under voluntary additional credits with a grade, but are not included in the final grade. When closing the credit point account (form on the Examination Office's website), the students decide which credits are to be credited and which are to be counted as voluntary credits. Of course, the compulsory modules have to be credited and you have to keep to the sum of the required ECTS points in the areas of advanced undergraduate studies (total and per area of specialisation).

Questions on the Master's programs

I'm applying for a M.Sc. programme in Tübingen. Can I already take M.Sc. courses in the summer semester?

In each programme you can earn 30 ECTS points more than the amount you are required to earn in your programme (see the relevant FAQ). Under certain conditions, the School of Business and Economics also offers Tübingen students the opportunity to take part in Master's courses during the summer semester before starting their Master's studies. This enables you to complete your Master's degree more quickly (fast-track option). As a prerequisite You will have to apply in due time for a place in one of the Tübingen Master's programmes. If you receive a confirmation, you can register for the corresponding exams in July/August or in October for the make-up exams. After you have enrolled in your M.Sc. programme, you can transfer your credits to the M.Sc. programme.

Note: There is a certain risk regarding participation in the exam. Students can only take part in the Master's examinations if they have previously been admitted to a Master's programme. To register for the exam, please send an e-mail to the Examination Office and ask to register for the exam of the corresponding Master's course (no registration via Campus-POS). The e-mail should contain a note stating that you have been admitted to a Master's programme.

Can I apply for a Master's degree if I have not yet completed my Bachelor's degree?

Obviously, our applicants regularly haven't completely finished their bachelor's degree when appling for a master's program. By the time they apply, they must have at least 120 ECTS credits. It must also be clear that you will complete your studies in the course of the summer semester, which will be evident from your transcript. However, it is definitely NOT possible to deliver credits for your Bachelor's degree as soon as you are enrolled in the Master's program. I.e. from October 1 onwards you may not (apart from repeat exams for exams from the summer semester) perform any examination work or hand in your Bachelor thesis, for example.

I am planning to join a Master's programme with 90 ECTS credits, but have only completed 180 ECTS credits in the Bachelor's programme, how can I earn the additional 30 ECTS credits?

According to the Bologna Rules, students must complete a total of 300 ECTS credits from their Bachelor's and Master's programmes. If you have completed a Bachelor's programme with 180 ECTS credits and would like to join a Master's programme with 90 ECTS credits, you must complete 30 additional ECTS credits by the time you register your Master's thesis. These 30 additional ECTS credits are neither included in the B.Sc. grade nor in the M.Sc. grade, i.e. they only have to be completed.

There are various options for the additional 30 ECTS credits:

  • modules in economics or business administration from the third B.Sc. year (number begins with 300, e.g. B351 Tax Accounting)
  • courses and modules listed in the module handbook for extra-curricular events
    • advanced language courses (at the Language Learning Centre or at the Faculty of Humanities) that go beyond the mandatory part of your B.Sc. studies
    • extra-curricular courses (e.g. psychology, mathematics, computer science, law or sociology) according to the module handbook for extra-curricular courses
  • master modules in economics and business administration, i.e. you can select additional courses from the course programme of the Master programmes.
