Types of doctorates: There are different types of doctorates in Germany:
- In individual doctoral studies, doctoral candidates work with a professor who supervises them. Interested parties should therefore first contact the professor they would like to supervise them and discuss their doctoral project with them. The professor will then put them in touch with the faculty. Doctoral candidates work very independently on their topic. Depending on the subject, topic and type of funding (scholarship, position at the university or with another employer), a doctoral programme lasts between three and five years.
- In a structured doctoral programme, doctoral students receive more systematic supervision and are supported through additional qualifications. This structure allows less freedom in the design of the doctoral programme, but usually enables students to complete their degree after three to four years. More information can be found here.
