Research award "For Women in Science" for Dr. Anna Vlasits
Dr. Anna Vlasits received the "For Women in Science" award by Nobel price winner Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard in cooperation with UNESCO and L'Oréal for her research on the retinanal function.
Vlasits is investigating how so-called amacrine cells recognize visual features such as color, brightness and movement. These cells come in a variety of different types. For many of them, it is still unknown exactly what role they play in vision. Vlasits uses 2-photon microscopy to work on living retinal tissue and measure how the activity of amacrine cells changes in response to light stimulation. Through this, she hopes to understand how features of different visual stimuli are detected, extracted and transmitted to the brain. The award will support her research with 15.000 euros.

Dr. Vlasits researched amacrine cells in Thomas Euler's lab as a postdoc from 2018-2021. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Northwestern University, Illinois.
