Tom Wallis is invited to give a talk at the LMU Munich on November 19th, 2014

Title of his talk: "Perceptual representations of image structure in the periphery"

Tom Wallis

Abstract:

We are less sensitive to visual structure falling on the retinal periphery; for example, objects presented in the periphery are harder to identify when surrounded by clutter ("crowding"). I will present experiments investigating sensitivity to

i) spatial distortions and

ii) summary statistic representations of peripheral image structure. I will discuss the extent to which differences in sensitivity can be captured by image-based observer models, and what this could tell us about how visual input is represented by the perceptual system.
