Exam Dates
The following rules apply to all courses offered by the Neural Information Processing (NIP) Group.
Short Version
NIP courses have a single exam date (Hauptprüfungstermin); no alternative dates are offered.
A retake exam (Nachprüfungstermin) is offered only to those who failed the exam on the main examination date or who were ill (doctor's note required).
For each course requiring an examination, there is only a single main examination date (Hauptprüfungstermin) at the end of the course—there is no alternative (or follow-up or secondary) exam date. If a student does not attend this main examination, they can only take the exam when the course is offered again in its regular cycle. (For NIP courses this is usually one year later; see the module description for the respective course.) To avoid long and unnecessary delays in your studies, we strongly recommend taking your exam at the one main examination date offered.
For those who do not pass the main examination, a retake exam (Nachprüfungstermin) will be offered. The retake exam will take place at the end of the semester break following the course or at the beginning of the semester after the course. Students who fail the main exam will receive the retake exam date via email. (Registration is required for the retake exam, see notes no.'s 3, 5 & 6 below.)
Exceptions:
The following individuals may also take the retake exam, even if they missed the main examination:
- Those who submit a doctor's note within three working days after the missed main exam. If sent by email, it should be sent to teaching-nipspam prevention@inf.uni-tuebingen.de.
Please also inform your responsible examination office. If you are unsure whom to contact, please consult the following website listing the responsible contact persons for all subjects: central examinations office - Those who provide a valid reason for missing the main exam within three working days via email to teaching-nipspam prevention@inf.uni-tuebingen.de. The reason must be accepted by us, and you will be informed via email about whether your reason has been recognized as valid. Please note that reasons such as “excessive workload,” “lack of preparation,” or “multiple exams on the same day” are not considered valid excuses (see note no. 7).
These individuals will also be automatically informed via email about the retake exam date. (Registration is required for the retake exam, see notes no.'s 3, 5 & 6 below.)
Notes:
- There is typically a minimum of four weeks between the announcement of the main exam results and the retake exam date.
- The format (written or oral) and scope of the retake exam will be communicated together with the exam date.
- Registration for the retake exam is mandatory and must be completed via email to the NIP office (teaching-nipspam prevention@inf.uni-tuebingen.de) at least two weeks before the announced exam date.
- The duration of an oral exam is generally 15–30 minutes for Bachelor courses and 30–60 minutes for Master courses, regardless of whether it is a main or retake exam.
- Withdrawal from an oral exam is only possible up to three working days (excluding Saturdays) before the exam. Otherwise, the exam will be graded as 5.0 (fail), regardless of whether it is a main or retake exam.
- If you have registered for the retake exam via email, the same withdrawal rules as for oral exams apply, regardless of whether the retake is written or oral (see notes no. 2 & 5).
- If your reason for missing the main exam is not accepted as valid, you may appeal against the decision to the examination board ("Prüfungsausschuss") responsible for the course. If the examination board grants your appeal despite our initial rejection, you will be allowed to take the retake exam.
