The ten-semester teacher training programme (6 semesters for the Bachelor of Education, 4 semesters for the Master of Education) comprises (at least) two subject specialisations, alongside a supplementary course in educational science and a semester of school placement. The Sports Science teacher training programme specifically prepares students for a career as a sports teacher in secondary schools.
The programme covers comprehensive fundamentals of sports science, includes a high proportion of practical work, and provides subject-specific teaching methodology. In addition, students acquire cross-disciplinary skills in the areas of educational issues in sport, the social role of sport, exercise and training sciences, and the medical foundations of sport.
PE Teaching
The Sports Science teacher training programme is designed to prepare students for a career as a physical education teacher in secondary schools. The ten-semester teacher training programme (from the 2015/2016 winter semester: 6 semesters of a Bachelor of Education, followed by 4 semesters of a Master of Education) comprises (at least) two subject specialisations, alongside interdisciplinary modules and a semester of school placement.
The subject of Sport is characterised by a broad spectrum of theoretical and practical training components. The range of lectures and seminars covers the following areas of Sports Science:
- In-depth knowledge of educational issues in sport and its didactic challenges, in particular the objectives and content of school sport and its methodology, taking into account aspects of learning and developmental theory as well as personality psychology (sports pedagogy, sports didactics, sports psychology).
- Knowledge of the historical development of sport and its social functions (history of sport and sociology of sport).
- Knowledge in the field of movement sciences (biomechanics, kinesiology).
- Knowledge of issues relating to general and specific training (training theory).
- Medical foundations of sport, such as functional anatomy, physiology, and prevention and rehabilitation through sport (sports medicine).
The practical and methodological training comprises eight core subjects (athletics, artistic gymnastics, gymnastics/dance, swimming, basketball, football, handball, volleyball), a field trip, supplementary optional sports and cross-sport exercises, as well as a compulsory in-depth study of two of the sports covered.

For students up to and including the 2009/2010 winter semester, the Academic Examination Regulations (WPO) and the Study Guide apply. From the 2010/2011 winter semester onwards, the Gymnasium Examination Regulations (GymPO) and the accompanying module handbook apply in Baden-Württemberg. From the 2015/2016 winter semester, the tiered degree programme structure for teacher training applies in Baden-Württemberg, comprising a Bachelor’s and a Master of Education.
