Excellence Strategy

Sustainable Management of Natural Resources

Research focuses on processes and possible consequences of global change and as well as on suitable mitigation strategies. Interdisciplinary research has to address the science needed for understanding of processes and impacts but also needs to focus on ethical, societal, law-related, and technical aspects. This includes the establishment of strategies for the management of natural resources in cooperation with policy makers, environmental regulators and society - also with respect to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Platform offers the chance to learn from a number of successful transdisciplinary research projects and to address the perspective of the non-researcher community.

Main Topics

  • Management of water resources and matter fluxes (safe drinking water supply, waste & waste water management).
  • Renewable energies (i.a. wind, hydropower, innovative fuels), energy storage, and carbon sequestration.
  • Impact of extreme events (heavy rainfall, droughts).
  • Biodiversity and invasive species.
  • Soil erosion and soil quality.
