The key areas of Meike Uhrig's research work and key topics include: popular film, animation and fantasy film as well as media effects, media and emotion research, film psychology and cognitive film theory.

She also co-operates nationally and internationally with associated disciplines such as informatics, American studies, psychology, physiology and pathophysiology, and with editorial departments in journalism and film.

Curriculum Vitae

Meike Uhrig studied journalism and film studies at the Universities of Marburg and Mainz. She received her Master’s in European Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Her doctoral thesis was funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate and the DAAD.

Her Master's thesis (2007) was an empirical investigation of the catharsis thesis and received the award for outstanding research from the Institute of Journalism, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz. The study was published in "Publizistik" in 2010.

In her doctoral studies, which she finished in 2014 with „summa cum laude“ honors at the Institute of Media Studies of Tübingen University, she adopted an interdisciplinary approach to examining the emotional effects of films (Springer VS 2014).

In addition to studying and working towards her doctorate, she worked as a freelance for the dpa and SWR and completed internships and job shadowing in various editorial departments in the fields of journalism and film (including the ZFD, ARD, ARTE, and The San Francisco Film Festival). 

She spent a research year at the Psychological Institute of Stanford University in 2010/2011. 

Meike Uhrig has been a member of the academic staff at the Institute of Media Studies, Eberhard Karls University Tübingen since 2011.
