BioNanoPhysics-Center

The research focus of the BioNanoPhysics Center lies on structures with dimensions on the nano-meter scale as well as on soft and biological matter. Nanotechnology forms the basis for a considerable proportion of the technological innovations of the 21st century. The targeted fabrication of nanostructures with specific functionalities plays just as important a role as their high-resolution characterization. Also, a better understanding of biological processes requires detailed knowledge of the involved systems at the nanoscale.

In the BioNanoPhysics Center experimental investigations are carried out as well as theoretical modeling. The research areas include bio-nanotechnology, many-body physics, solid-state physics in low-dimensional systems, nano-antennas, and interfaces between soft ((macro)molecules, cells) and hard matter. A methodological focus is on the one hand on the preparation of the systems to be examined, and on the other hand on modern high-resolution microscopy, spectroscopy, and scattering techniques. The use of such methods on nanoscale, complex or hybrid matter offers fascinating insights into this interdisciplinary field and explores the application potential of the investigated nanostructures. Accordingly, numerous collaborations exist between the BioNanoPhysics Center and other areas of expertise, in particular within the Center of Light-Matter-Interaction, Sensors and Analytics LISA+ and the Nanoscience study program, with the Departments of Chemistry and Biology, the Cluster of Excellence Machine Learning, and the Medical Faculty.
