University Library

Our mission

In spring 2024, the University Library drew up the following key points up to 2030.

What do we do?

The library supports a wide range of services for research, teaching and administration at the university. As a central information hub, we provide academic information resources in a variety of forms (analog and digital), make them as accessible as possible and impart the necessary skills for their use. We are deeply embedded on campus, which provides a strong foundation for further expanding our services for supporting research and teaching. We assume supra-regional responsibility for the scientific community.
We see ourselves as a research library and are a “partner in research”. Our focus is on academic publishing, open science, working with research data, copyright, teaching key skills for digital technologies and methods of artificial intelligence as well as the indexing of information resources and the digitization and text recognition of a wide variety of writings and scripts/types of scripts. Our valuable and diverse holdings and collection focuses are a springboard for the development of new cooperation projects in the field of digital humanities within the university and in supra-regional partnerships.
We see ourselves as a “third place” for students and ensure the further expansion of attractive learning spaces throughout the University of Tübingen's library system. We support our students with a wide range of modern teaching and learning opportunities, consultation services and application-related training courses. Within the university, we see ourselves as a reliable partner in the area of administration and as a contact point for the exemplary expansion of joint infrastructures.

How do we work?

Our services have clear targets and associated monitoring. There is a balance between new and already established services. The teams work in a self-directed manner whenever this is sensible and feasible. We are sustainably improving the external and internal perception of our services. Our cooperations with other institutions at the university are well-coordinated. Interfaces between our services and those of other institutions at the university are being appraised in a collegial process and are developed further cooperatively. We strive to communicate how different work scenarios and services at the University Library contribute to the university at an administrative level. We closely communicate with the Rectorate to secure sustainable financial allocations for information resources.

What is particularly important to us?

We make many efforts to maintain and further promote the high motivation of our colleagues and the good working atmosphere at the UB. We are promoting the ethos of librarianship as a vital profession for society. We monitor the dynamics of the digital transformation in research and teaching and expand our services to accommodate changing demands. We support our colleagues as they adapt to the changing needs of our patrons.
