Postdoctoral Researcher on “AI and Visual Culture” (f/m/d)
(for five years, salary category 13 TV-L, 100%)

The RHET AI Center at the University of Tübingen investigates ways to facilitate a well-informed critical discussion of artificial intelligence that takes the enormous social implications of AI into account. It is one of four new centers for the science of science communication funded by Volkswagen Foundation. At the RHET AI Center, five research units are to be established as a joint project by the following project partners: the Rhetoric Department and the Institute of Media Studies at the University of Tübingen, the Department of Science Communication at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, researchers from the Excellence Cluster Machine Learning and Cyber Valley, Europe’s largest AI research consortium, as well as the practice partner Wissenschaft im Dialog in Berlin. The Visual Communication Unit of RHET AI, headed by Prof. Dr. Susanne Marschall and Dr. Erwin Feyersinger (Institute of Media Studies), is concerned with understanding current multimodal discourses on artificial intelligence. The unit examines representations of AI as well as the use of AI in audiovisual media. Areas of research include fiction films, documentaries, science journalism, and the communication of academic and industrial AI research. Responsibilities:  

  • Successful completion of a postdoctoral research project
  • Regular publication of research findings
  • Creation of an audiovisual database
  • Close readings of recurring visual motifs and tropes
  • Organization of conferences Development of new concepts of audiovisual communication
  • Development and implementation of public engagement workshops and workshops for scientists

Requirements:  

  • Outstanding doctoral degree in film studies, media studies, visual culture studies, science communication (with a focus on moving images), or related disciplines
  • Publications relevant to the aims of the Unit
  • Strong interest in all forms of audiovisual representations of AI
  • High level of initiative
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Very good knowledge of English
  • Willingness to move to Tübingen
