Abstract
Posttranslational modification of proteins by SUMOylation plays essential roles in eukaryotic development. Many covalently modified SUMO targets have been identified, however, the extent and significance of non-covalent interactions of SUMO with cellular proteins is poorly understood.
Here, we identified eleven SUMO-Interacting Proteins (SIPs) that regulate histone and DNA methylation state, or act as SUMO-targeted Ub ligases (STUbLs). Whereas some Arabidopsis STUbLs sustained a conserved role in maintaining genome integrity, others evolved novel plant functions such as AT-STUbL4 that we show is involved in floral transition by regulating protein levels of Cycling DOF Factor 2 (CDF2), and hence transcript levels of CONSTANS, the central player in the photoperiodic flowering pathway.
