Upon request, the Rector may release professors from official duties in teaching and, if applicable, in self-administration, if there is a concrete research project and a substitute takes over the official duties (teaching, examinations, etc.).
The legal basis: § 49, Abs. 7 of the State University Act (LHG):
"Professors may be temporarily released from their other official duties, in whole or in part, for certain research and development projects as well as for further training in practice, while retaining their remuneration (studio, repertory, research or practical semesters). The proper representation of the subject in teaching as well as the performance of examinations must be guaranteed. As a rule, the exemption can only be granted for one semester and at the earliest four years after the expiration of the last exemption. The rectorate of the university decides on the application for exemption. The application may only be granted if the professor undertakes, during the leave of absence pursuant to sentence 1, to engage in secondary employment only under the conditions and to the extent permitted by the provisions of secondary employment law. The result of the research work during the research semester shall be reported to the responsible university bodies."
Note: The exemption includes all rights and duties in the self-administration (including the faculty council, appointment and evaluation committees, chair of the examination board, dean of studies).
