The Institute of Media Studies offers a broad profile of media-based courses to qualify students in various fields. The B.A. course “Media Studies – Media Practice” at the Institute of Media Studies aims to combine the transfer of media-relevant skills in a course with modern intellectual and social scientific content. The results are twofold. On the one hand, it offers you practical preparation for editorial tasks in traditional and digital media, and on the other it provides the qualifications required for you to continue on to a Master’s course.

The course will enable you to settle very quickly into the requirements of your chosen profession. Intensive group and project work under the guidance of experienced lecturers from the field will leave you with analytical, methodical, practical and strategic competencies that you will be able to use in a wide range of areas. Past graduates in Media Studies at Tübingen now work for various major magazines and newspapers, TV and radio, in media management, advertising agencies and media research everywhere.

In accordance with the State University Law, students on second degrees are required to prove that they are capable of completing the parallel degree within the standard period of study. This evidence is usually considered as given if students receive a grade of “good” for their performance to date, but not if the grade is lower. The University of Tübingen permits students to embark on a second degree from their second semester onwards. If you wish to register for a second degree with the student secretariat, you must submit the written approval of all the faculties in question.

The closing date for applications is always the 15th of July of the respective year. Courses start with the winter semester. The deadline for applications for the fall term 2020/21 has been extended until August 20, 2020 due to the events surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

The applications process is basically in two stages. First you must register with Tübingen University's ALMA platform where you will get a user's account. There you will be able to fill out an online application for the programme of your choice and upload all necessary documents digitally. For more detailed information on the application process, please refer to the Internetseite der Internet website of the University of Tübingen. Your application must include the correctly completed application form and a confirmation of the necessary pre-university qualifications.

If you have obtained your pre-university qualifications in a non-German speaking country, then you must also pass a DSG examination and receive a grade of at least 2-3 (i.e. 75% of the achievable points). Should you have completed professional or vocational training or if you have already worked in a media-related environment (e.g. intership or as a volunteer), then please include the corresponding reports, samples of your work etc., as they will be taken into account during the selection process. The same also applies for any time you have spent abroad and confirmation of additional foreign language skills, for instance in the forms of certificates or reports.

The Media Studies course requires you to be fluent in German and have excellent linguistic skills. The course also requires you to have a very good knowledge of English and at least one other foreign language; the appropriate confirmations must be available for the selection process.

It would be extremely advantageous if you were to have completed an internship to obtain some experience in the media world. However, it is not necessary to have done so for your application to be considered.

As the B.A. course “Media Studies – Media Practice” is a combination course, you are free to choose any second subject you like. There is a large number of options, which you will find listed here.

Do make sure that the second subject you choose is appropriate to your personal interests and professional goals.

Both the B.A. main subject and the second subject are admission-restricted. Sixty places are allocated for the main subject in the winter semester. There are 30 places for the second subject.

Unlike other courses, your grades are only one of several criteria that are considered in the decision-making process. It is therefore not possible to provide a NC limit. Other criteria are e.g. the grade for German, language skills, any prior professional training, internships and samples of work.

§7
(1) The sequence is based on the average grade of the HZB. Alternatively, the overall grade of the qualifying examination will apply for individuals with professional qualifications but no school qualification for higher education as per § 59 LHG or, if no qualifying examination is required by law, the overall grade of the examination for the master craftsman’s diploma or equivalent advanced certificate or academic exam as per § 14 of the Education Act.

(2) For vocational training, vocational experience, special preparatory training or extracurricular achievements and qualifications that confirm suitability for a course of studies, the grade is improved by up to 0.4. The following criteria are rated particularly highly:
