In her research, Julia Deborah Fischer focuses on media constructions of space, with a particular emphasis on platform research and visual communication, using qualitative methods. She focuses on how specific spaces are constructed through media representations and logics – such as cartographic representations in news media – and reflects on these processes from a neopragmatistic perspective.
She currently focuses on journalistic cartography exploring how news maps construct spatial relations. In this context, she examines visualisation practices and investigates their potential for critical reflection.
PhD Thesis
Julia Deborah Fischer is currently pursuing a cumulative PhD in Geography, focusing on media-geographical research questions. Her work examines the interrelations between social processes, technologies, and spatial configurations, and how these mutually shape one another—for instance, through mobility and communication practices in European 'smart cities'.
