The research area of PD Dr. Ulrich Hägele, Visual Anthropology and Media Culture, is closely linked to the Chair of Audiovisual Media, Film and Television and the Center for Media Competence (ZFM). Dr. Hägele focuses on the production, use, and reception of both moving and still images. An interdisciplinary ethnographic-analytical approach is taken to analyse images from the past and the present. The research corpus includes photographs, videos and other pictorial forms of representation. The current research in Visual Anthropology and Media Culture primarily undertakes studies that deal with cross-cultural perspectives of photography or film. Areas of focus includes photography on the Internet and in print media, visualization of science, private photo albums and photo books, smartphones (photography and video), and museum, archival, and conservational practices of visual media.
