Portrait

Johanna E.E. Lander is a doctoral student and Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in Korean Studies at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany.
Her master’s thesis, The Politics of Democracy Promotion: Political Rationality and German Foundations in South Korea (2010–2024), explored the question: Why do German political foundations continue to promote democracy in consolidated democracies like South Korea—and how do they adapt their strategies in response to shifting political conditions? The study investigated this puzzle through a comparative analysis of the activities of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FEF), Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAF), and Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) from 2010 to 2024.

Her current doctoral research builds on this work by tracing the historical evolution of German influence on South Korea’s democratization.
