Collections

Our collections include more than 20,000 objects, of which many are thin sections. We are currently engaged in database development and digitization. Thin section digitization includes high resolution scanning under PPL and XPL using an Olympus BX53M petrographic microscope equipped with a Prior automated stage. Thin sections can be scanned at a variety of magnifications with hundreds to thousands of individual photomicrographs compiled into a photomosaic (SVS format) using the Microvisioneer AutoWSI software package. We are able to use these very large files to conduct image analysis, generate snapshots of smaller areas, and generate thumbnail views of all thin sections. Digitization of thin sections from entire sites provides the opportunity for remote collaboration between researchers, and provides teaching resources, in addition to generating a permanent archive of fragile samples.
