Narrative Skills and Cross-Domain Word Problem Solving

Linking Narrative Skills to Word Problem-Solving Across Domains. While mathematical skills are widely acknowledged as essential, narrative skills are just as crucial for cognition and key societal functions. However, their connection is underexplored, as narrative abilities (e.g., storytelling) and mathematical problem-solving may be linked through shared cognitive processes.

This interdisciplinary project examines the relationship between these traditionally separate domains through three studies: the role of narrative skills in word problems, developmental changes, and the influence of narrative context and multilingualism. This innovative approach recognizes their societal importance and contributes to a theoretical framework bridging linguistic and mathematical cognition.

Global Urbanities in Times of Multi-Crisis

Exploring the crisis responses of middle-income strata in Rio de Janeiro and Nairobi.

Global, national, and regional crises affect “middle-classes” in Africa, South America, and Asia massively. The project examines the contextual influence of crises in two exemplary cities, Rio de Janeiro and Nairobi. Brazil´s major crisis in the 2010s and Kenya´s crisis since 2022 have led to distinctive reactions.

The research design explores how economic, political, and other crises, like environmental and demographic change, have an effect on different factions in the middle-income strata.
