Migration as Prophecy Fulfilled in the Ethiopia–South Africa Corridor
Abstract
This talk explores the role of religion, particularly evangelical Christianity, in shaping the Hadiya migration from southern Ethiopia to South Africa. Religion has influenced every phase of the migration process: from imagining South Africa as a sacred destination and viewing migration as a divine gift, to risk perception, negotiation, place-making, and spiritual strategies for navigating challenges in the new environment. The talk situates these dynamics in a broader historical context, showing how spiritually animated migratory agency has enabled Hadiya migrants to confront Ethiopia’s regional inequalities. It highlights the need for greater attention to intangible factors in migration studies.
