Faculty Council

The Faculty Council is the decision-making body of the Faculty and advises on all matters of fundamental importance to the Faculty. Approval by the Faculty Council is required for structure and development plans, the formation, change and termination of faculty facilities, and examination and study regulations.

The Dean chairs the Faculty Council; all members of the Faculty Board and the Heads of Department are members of the Faculty Council by virtue of their office. In addition, five university lecturers, three academic staff, three non-academic staff members and, as a general rule, five student representatives are members of the Faculty Council. The student representatives are elected by the students of the Faculty for a period of one year. All other groups elect their representatives for a period of six years each.

The Institute Directors and the Equal Opportunities Officer take part in the meetings in an advisory capacity, as do student representatives from those subjects that are not represented by elected student representatives.

Members by virtue of their office from Winter Semester 2022/23

Ethics Committee

The Faculty Board has established an Ethics Committee. You can find further information here.

Objectives and duties of the Equal Opportunities Committee

In cooperation with the Equal Opportunities Committee, the Equal Opportunities Officer of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences carries out the legal tasks set out in the Higher Education Act of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg regarding the promotion of female junior researchers in particular.

The Equal Opportunities Committee provides support and assistance to the Family Office to implement a family-friendly university (audit family-friendly university).

Furthermore, the Equal Opportunities Committee is in charge of diversity matters. In cases of sexual harassment or discrimination based on ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, or social and religious background, both the members of the Equal Opportunities Committee and others (Associate Deans Academic, Central Equal Opportunities Officer) are the main points of contact.
The Equal Opportunities Concept of the university sets out the tasks of the Equal Opportunities Officer in more detail. The officer has an advisory function in matters concerning the Faculty Board.

The Equal Opportunities Committee is comprised of the Equal Opportunities Officer of the Faculty, the deputy officer and student and non-student representatives from all institutes and the two schools/departments. During the semester, the Equal Opportunities Committee meets on a regular basis (Rules of Procedure of the Equal Opportunities Committee at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences).

Equal Opportunities at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences

Today, female student numbers correspond to those of males, or even exceed them, but during the course of their academic careers the proportion of females is continually shrinking (‘leaking pipeline’).

The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences is no exception: The proportion of females among all students at the Faculty is very high (60.9 percent in winter semester 2015/16). Among first-year students, their proportion is even higher (64.8 percent). At the other end of the pipeline, however, the proportion of female professors at the faculty is only 20.5 percent (9 women, 35 men). Given the specific situation of women in Economics and Social Sciences, the Equal Opportunities Committee focuses on the promotion of female junior researchers and gender research.

The Faculty has funding programs in place that serve this purpose.

Interested students, doctoral students, and mid-level faculty staff have the opportunity to submit applications for a partial funding of research projects, conference participation, etc., to the Equal Opportunities Committee. ("Equal Opportunities Committee Funds").

As part of the TEAching-Equality-Program, financed through quality assurance funds, the individual institutes of the Faculty and the School of Business and Economics are free to apply for funding of gender studies teaching assignments and gender-related talks and lectures ("TEAching-Equality-Program").
The Equal Opportunities Committee at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences has budgeted annual TEA funds to carry out the workshop on “Gender Mainstreaming and Diversity Management – Professional Qualification Areas”, which has been included in the teaching program for interdisciplinary qualifications.

Researchers in the field of gender studies must continue to apply for guest professorships at the University of Tübingen Central Equal Opportunities Officer

Research Committee

At the present time, the Faculty Board is responsible for all research questions. Please contact the the vice dean for research affairs or the dean if you have questions related to research.

At the Department of Social Sciences

Academic Council

The Academic Council makes recommendations for the further development of course contents and forms of study, and also for the allocation of funds provided for teaching and learning matters, thereby taking student reviews of lectures and seminars into account.
In general, the Academic Council meets twice in every semester. It is comprised of the Associate Dean Academic as the chairperson, four professors, a member of the Academic Service, and four student representatives. The Faculty Council appoints the members for a term of six years, and the student members for one year.

In general, the Academic Council meets twice in every semester. It is comprised of the Associate Dean Academic as the chairperson, four professors, a member of the Academic Service, and four student representatives. The Faculty Council appoints the members for a term of six years, and the student representatives for one year.
