Dr. Christina Artemenko has been awarded a Margarete von Wrangell Fellowship for Women (Research group Diagnostics and Cognitive Neuropsychology, Prof. Dr. Nürk)

‘Arithmetic across the life span – A multi-methodological approach’

During this 5 year programme, Dr. Artemenko will investigate how arithmetic develops over the whole life span by using a multi-methodological approach consisting of behavioral methods as well as neuroscientific methods including functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and transcranial electric stimulation (tES). 

Thereby, studying the neurocognitive correlates of arithmetic not only in children and young adults, but also in elderly was never done before and opens a new research field. Moreover, she developed a theoretical model on arithmetic complexity and would like to test, refine and extend this model in her project by collecting crucial evidence on the underlying mechanisms and developmental changes of arithmetic.

The Margarete von Wrangell Fellowship for Women is financially funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg and the European Social Fund. The programme aims to encourage qualified female scientists to achieve their postdoctoral qualification (namely habilitation). It promotes equality between men and women at the universities of the Land as women are still underrepresented when it comes to the final career step: be awarded a professorship.
