Aus dem Gutachten der Jury des Jan van Gelderprijs:
Goldgrund und Perspektive captivates readers with both its remarkable boldness and the apparent ease with which Saskia Quené addresses major questions in the field of art history. Despite this ease, Quené does not hesitate to challenge both herself and the reader. She leaves no stone unturned, questioning widely accepted interpretations, historiographic paradigms, and conventional terminology. These multifocal discourses evoke the image of a modern-day Zorro, fencing with multiple adversaries at once. Yet, like Zorro, the masked movie hero, Quené engages with a mind that is both flexible and agile. She wastes no time on rhetorical flourishes as she briskly examines gold, perspective, and the entire discipline of art history. This swiftness undoubtedly reflects Quené’s skill as a writer. While Dutch readers may sometimes struggle with verbose German texts and professorial grandiloquence, Quené’s writing avoids these pitfalls. Her phrasing is striking, her arguments are vigorous, and every sentence has substance. Occasionally, there is so much content that readers may need a moment to catch their breath, and her revisionism occasionally did not quite convince all jury members. However, the jury unanimously agrees that her book is genuinely thought-provoking. Quené positions herself, demonstrates impressive inventiveness and intellectual personality. Thus, in keeping with the spirit of the Jan van Gelder Prize for Art History, the jury has met ‘auspiciousness’ that is indeed ‘immediately realized.’
