Personalizing engagement: The case of slideshow activism

Slideshow activism is a new activist tactic on visual-based social media such as Instagram. Using the empirical case of a popular Instagram account, this presentation outlines the contours of slideshow activism as an activist tactic, a strategy for civic engagement, and a digital subgenre. The presentation further explores how, in adapting to the logic of the platform, this activist tactic constructs an ideal of the politically engaged citizen. The tradeoff between this adaptation and the personalization of engagement is further discussed, with an eye to implications for the wider civic culture.
