Ari Purnama is an Assistant Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Oregon and a hybrid scholar, learning facilitator, and practitioner of film and audiovisual media. He holds a Ph.D. in Film Studies from the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and specializes in the cinemas and production cultures of the Global South, particularly Southeast Asia and East Africa. His research interests include film aesthetics, cinematography, production design, and diversity and inclusion in the creative industries. He is the author of Film Style in Indonesian Cinema, 1998-2018: Lighting, Production Design and Camera Movement (Edinburgh University Press, 2023), the first academic study of visual aesthetics in Indonesian film. He is currently working on a book on interracial romance in transnational film and new media, and a book on the Indian Telugu film RRR (2022) for the University of Texas Press' 21st Century Film Essentials series. His most recent documentary, Demystifying the North (2021), which examines the affective liminal experiences of Global South migrants in Northern Europe, demonstrates his commitment to the Creative Practice as Research (CPaR) methodology. In 2023, he received a grant from the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of the State of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, to initiate a research project and inter-university collaboration on possible ways to integrate the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into film and media studies education.
