Sander Diederich

 Research Project 
Sander Diederich is a sociologist whose dissertation examines the interrelation between dynamics of precarization and alternativity. Drawing on figurational sociology, they approach the lived experience of Democratic Confederalism in Rojava and its transnational adaptation in Germany through a multi-sited ethnography.
The collapse of Rojava's de facto autonomy amid the ongoing 'peace process' in Syria renders the question of what becomes of the accomplishments of its prefigurative model of stateless autonomy pertinent. How is this refiguration experienced on the ground? What happens to the hope emanating from Rojava, and what travels back from contexts already prefigured by a powerful nation-state?
Understanding precarization and alternativity as processes of shifting interdependence, the study traces how alternative forms of coexistence endure, adapt or transform under (intensifying) dynamics of precarization. In doing so, it explores how experiences of existential threat engender and are simultaneously refigured by such alternatives.
